FJ'S JUICY FACTS
Why Drink FJ's Freshly Juiced Fruit Juices?
Nutritionists and health experts recommend
a balanced diet of many different food types, but generally recommend a diet with a higher intake of fruit and
vegetables. This is largely because fruit and vegetables provide a good deal of the essentials we
need for our bodies to function properly.
Not only are they packed with many of
the vitamins and minerals we need, they also contain powerful antioxidants
which have become increasingly recognized as important for eliminating toxins called free radicals from your body. Latest
research indicates that these free radicals- leftovers from cellular function or introduced into the body by smoking,
drug taking( including coffee, tea, alcohol and some soft drinks) and environmental pollution-are closely linked to causing
life threatening diseases, including many cancers.
We have all seen the healthy
food pyramid which recommends at least five serves of vegetables and two serves of fresh fruit per day. However we also know
that our busy lifestyles and modern eating habits do not always allow us to ensure we look after ourselves properly.
The great thing about drinking a fresh fruit or vege juice each day is that it is a
quick and convenient way of getting many of the benefits of fresh fruit and vegetables in a delicious and energizing
way. In fact many nutritionists recognize this by allowing one serve of fresh fruit or vegetable juice to count as one( but
only one) of the serves in the healthy food pyramid. Of course, your diet should still consist of healthy
doses of fruit and veges as well!
What About the Sugar?
Yes, most fruits and some vegetables contain amounts of a natural fruit sugar called
fructose. Fructose is a disaccharide composed of two simpler sugars called glucose and
sucrose. For the body to use this sugar the liver has to break it down (metabolise it) into its simpler forms. The cells of
the body only ‘burn’ glucose for energy and all the other forms of energy, including fat and more complex forms
of sugar and carbohydrates have to be broken down into glucose. The speed that this simple sugar becomes available to the
cells is important as the slower and more regular it is the better the body copes with its fluctuation. Each food or food
type has an index known as the Glycaemic Index (G.I.) which tells us how rapidly the sugar
in them becomes available to the cells.
Even though fruit juice does contain fruit sugar
it has a low G I. This compares very favourably to soft drinks, fruit based drinks and
smoothies and milk drinks with added sugar. Soft drinks and alcohol, are considered to contain “empty”calories,
with high G I`s and no other nutritional value.
As part of a well balanced and varied diet fresh fruit juice is
a wonderful way of receiving some of the vital ingredients that keep you healthy and active. Remember
that FJ`s fresh juices contain no added sugar.
What`s all the fuss about Vitamin C?
We
all know that fresh orange juice contains plenty of vitamin C, a powerful water soluble
antioxidant, and an absolutely vital part of good health. Vitamin C is involved in the formation of collagen
in the body. Collagen is found wherever tissues require strengthening, especially in those tissues with a protective,
connective or structural function. Collagen is critical to the maintenance of bone and
blood vessels and is essential for the healing of wounds and the formation of red blood cells. Severe lack of vitamin C results
in a disease called scurvy where teeth fall out and wounds won`t heal. Vitamin C is also a great aid in the absorption of
iron and is beneficial in the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia, which is one of the most common womens health problems.
It is also estimated that if you smoke, which destroys vitamin C in the body, you should have double the recommended daily
allowance (RDA).An interesting fact is that humans are one of the few mammal species that has lost the ability to manufacture
vitamin C in their bodies and have to ingest it.
Recent research also indicates that vitamin
C is a powerful antioxidant useful for removing reactive oxygen species and free radicals that can prove harmful
to the body. Other fruits that are a good source of vitamin C include guava (one of the highest) grapefruit, apples and strawberries.
So, what else is in fresh fruit juice that is good for you?
The range and associated benefits of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants
in fresh fruit and vege juices is far too big to reproduce here, but includes Vitamins A, C, B1(Thiamin), B6(Pyroxidine),
and B9(Folate). Fresh juices also contain minerals and trace elements such as potassium, iron, magnesium,
calcium, phosphorous, copper, zinc and selenium. On top of that they contain a group of
naturally occurring antioxidant chemicals called phytochemicals or phytonutrients, about
which we are only beginning to understand the importance of, such as the caretenoids (e.g. beta carotene in carrot juice and
lycopene in watermelon juice) and flavonoids, found in citrus, strawberries, and raspberries. These powerful antioxidants are
becoming more and more recognised in promoting resistance to, and recovery from, many serious diseases.
Don`t the vitamins and minerals
deteriorate after a while?
Most of the breakdown in nutrient value occurs
through oxidation after juicing, that is, exposure to air and heat. Because FJ`s fresh juices are squeezed or extracted
fresh from refrigerated fruit and veges, immediately bottled, capped and refrigerated, then placed on sale, the integrity of the vital ingredients is maintained, and loss of the nutrient
value is minimalised. Furthermore our juices contain no preservatives and have not been pasteurized or heat treated in any
way which can result in loss of nutrient value. The benefit is in being able to purchase a chilled fresh
juice quickly at a very affordable price.
Why Does the Juice Vary
in Flavour Sometimes?
Because our juices are made from only real fruit, flavour will vary throughout the
year depending on time of season, availability, varietal types and where the produce has come from (all over Australia!).
We endeavour to ensure we produce juices of optimal flavour at all times. Because we produce
thousands of juices each week from fruit that always varies to some extent, it is hard to monitor the quality of them all.
If you have a genuine problem with any of our products please advise us and we will be happy to replace it for you.
So
the next time you go to buy a drink, think about the alternative. Where else can you get a drink that is not
only affordable and tastes great, but also helps maintain your inner health and wellbeing.
